What does interaction mean in multple regression and how can I find it using excel?
If I have a multiple regression equation with the y-variable and two x-variables how do I determine if there is an interaction term. If there is one how would I quantify it using excel?
You cannot find interaction using excel, it is simply not powerful enough. You need to use statiscal techniques that show you there is an interaction. Interaction is when two or more variables effect each other, thus not actually measuring the variables independently because they effect one another. For example, if you measure income, race, and age you would find that age and race both affect income thus you checked for interaction because you cannot delcare them as true independent variables and thus need to control for interaction and account for it in your data. Stronger programs such as SAS, or SPSS help do the footwork but the hand version really doesn’t take too long either..While it’s about impossible for me to teach you this online, simply learn the technique from your professor. You will make a two by three table, run the formulas, and your final numbers will let you know if there is interaction. If the regression or anova is beyond two variables, which it normally is, you have to check for interaction. Later you may learn about factor analysis and when you see clusters in the eigenvalues you know that they are loading heavily on those variables too but that is even a longer story then checking for a three way interaction such as in your case of regression.
